Integrated Assembly Automation: Choices and Applications

The enabling factors and technologies in the evolution of automation for airframe assembly include NC technology, miniaturization and microprocessors, precision machinery, advances in robotics, economics, precision of airframe assembly, an aging workforce, and digital thread. The latest issues and challenges are one-shot drill and countersink, automated fastening (drill and fill), the transfer of painting and coating technology from automotive to aerospace, AGV and rail transfer alternatives to cranes for transfer, alignment systems, and automated quality inspection.
