The application of high-speed peel grinding for automotive components has evolved from German research in the 1990s. The crux of the process is that it focuses all the metal removal to a narrow contact length of <1 mm to allow the maximum stock removal rate (Q’) with the minimum specific grinding energy (U’) and normal forces (Fn) for a given wheel spindle power. Very specific grinding conditions are required to minimize wheel wear and prevent burn. This has led to the design of dedicated grinders, such as those from Giustina. Grinding process and machine specifics are discussed in detail. Until recently, the process has been limited to Europe because of its acceptance of oil coolant. However, with the introduction of new high-strength CBN grains and vitrified bonds, peel grinding is becoming a viable alternative to hard turning in the United States, where water-based coolants are preferred.
