In precision grinding, workpiece waviness and workpiece surface finish are often measured in microinches. On this level minute vibrations of the grinding machine and workpiece can often be significant. In troubleshooting a vibration problem it is helpful at the beginning to determine whether the chatter is due to forced vibration such as unbalance or other fixed forced frequencies or whether it is regenerative chatter occurring in the vicinity of a natural frequency of the machine-workpiece structure. In this paper the effect of vibration and other periodic disturbances on workpiece geometry and surface finish is discussed, followed by a discussion of regenerative grinding chatter and finally a discussion of ways and means to avoid or eliminate vibrations in grinding.
