Energy Conservation in Manufacturing

The industrial sector of the United States economy consumes approximately one-third of the energy used in our country. The 1973-74 crisis period in energy supply brought into sharp focus the dependence of the United States on foreign energy supplies and the need for energy conservation and improved efficiency of energy use in manufacturing. A somewhat detailed description of how the manufacturing organizations of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation adjusted to successfully cope with energy constraints resulting from the shortages of the 1973-74 crisis period. Programs were implemented in both the areas of plant services and manufacturing process to permanently reduce energy consumption requirements. Plans were projected within Westinghouse to cope with additional energy constraints during the 1974-75 heating season and are discussed with descriptions of achievements accomplished during the period.
