Knowledge of the factors affecting the actual mechanical properties of castings (as opposed to test bars) is vital to the design engineer. Many commercial castings contain some residual porosity and the importance of this is discussed in relation to mechanical properties. Mechanical properties are especially dependent on the mode of freezing of the alloy and on section thickness. The integrity of castings also depends on the avoidance of local defects which often arise from poor design. Design features recommended for the avoidance of these are given.
