Back to Autoclave Systems for Bonding

An autoclave is an industrial pressure cooker, designed to apply heat and pressure in a controlled and monitored environment. This paper describes the design, engineering, and manufacturing of complete autoclave systems. To be registered with the national board, an autoclave must be constructed and tested in accordance with the ASME code. If later repaired or modified, an autoclave must be retested and re-registered to retain certification. Specifications for an autoclave system should include pressure and temperature ratings, types of quick opening doors, and safety/interlock systems. Other considerations are systems for heating, cooling, vacuum, air circulation, material handling equipment, and electrical controls and instrumentation. Controls may be manual, semiautomatic, or automatic.
