Glasses and ceramics have been ground with both loose grain and coated abrasive lap covers. In general, a hydrocarbon oil appears to be a better medium than water for preventing tool wear on either diamond or silicon carbide. The use of a coated abrasive rather than loose grain is believed to promote chip formation by deformation processes.
