Cost Effective Composite Processing

Description
Back to Cost Effective Composite Processing
Composite manufacturing processes available today include wet hand lay-up, vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), pultrusion, filament winding, and autoclave cure. These processes vary in capabilities and cost. The core of cost effective processing is in choosing the best process for the part in question. Two case histories of changing from metallic components to a composite will be reviewed, as well as a change from autoclave curing to VARTM. The case histories involve: electric motor part manufacturing, pump impeller manufacturing, and fairing manufacturing. Author: Pieter Van Dine, Electric Boat Corporation, Mystic, CT.
