RESIDUAL STRESSES FROM MACHINING OPERATIONS

After giving a short history of residual stress research, the author analyzes the origin of machining stresses around the cutting tool. The mechanism of stress formation is covered. Experiments with single point tools are described and the results interputed. Stresses due to milling and grinding are considered. A lengthy list of references is appended. (Formerly 9)
