TOOL MATERIAL SELECTION AND APPLICATION

The factors related to the proper selection and application of tool materials require a knowledge of the properties of materials and of how the materials fail. The distinguishing properties of tool materials, hot hardness, recovery hardness, and toughness, are described and discussed for tool steels, cast cobalt-base alloys, cemented carbides, ceramics, and diamond. Tool materials failures are summarized.
