This paper describes alloys currently investment cast as well as their mechanical properties, uses, and advantages. Alloys of aluminum, magnesium, copper, nickel, iron, and more recently, titanium are being cast. With the exception of titanium, all alloys can be cast to standard precision casting tolerances. Most commonly used aluminum alloy is alloy 356 which is very castable and reliable. Its properties are described. Magnesium alloys are not widely cast. Copper base alloys are widely used in corrosion or electrical applications. Examples of these are described. Applications and properties of common nickel base alloys such as lnconel 718, lnconel 713 and others used in high temperature environments are provided. Alloys of these types form the major production of investment castings, outside of the jet engine foil market. References.
