Simulated Production Grinding Using Plated Borazon (CBN) Wheels

Plated borazon (CBN) wheels were life-tested under simulated production grinding conditions. Workpiece quality, as represented by geometry, surface finish and roundness, was found to be affected by the average rough grinding chip thickness. Wheel sharpness slowly decreased with use and the resulting G ratio was also influenced by the chip thickness. Studies of workpiece quality showed that the statistical mean values of geometry, finish and roundness could be held to less than 175 millionths, 30 rms and 50 millionths respectively.
