Machinability is a characteristic of the workpiece material expressing how that material can be machined with ease. However, machinability is not yet accurately measured or defined in a quantitative manner. This paper elaborates on several approaches to the understanding of the term machinability, the machining factors affecting the machining of metal and quantitative methods to rate the machinability of metals. 5 refs
