Back to A Metallurgical Approach to Machining of Aluminum

Aluminum, although not a new material, presents a challenge to many manufacturers not familiar with its machining. This paper reviews some basic metallurgical criteria to characterize this material. The approach taken is to use easily obtainable data and basic metallurgical principles to build an understanding of aluminum and aluminum alloys. Comparison of phase fraction charts and micro hardness data along with a discussion of casting methods and heat treatments gives the novice a set of guidelines by which to appraise the metal cutting characteristics of aluminum.
