Back to Factors Affecting Forces and Power During High-Speed Precision Grinding

High-speed internal and external grinding was used to investigate the effects of diamond-dressing, wheel-work conformity, coolant and grinding contact time on forces and power. The slope of the metal removal rate-normal force relationship provides the metal removal parameter, and the slope of the power-metal removal rate relationship provides the specific power. These two factors define the cutting efficiency of a grinding system. The most efficient cutting system (lowers forces and power) is not necessarily the best as the G ratio vs. metal removal rate data show. Softer wheel grades, higher wheel-speed, poorer wheel-work conformity, sharper dressing and higher-lubricity coolants improve cutting efficiency.
