Description
Back to How Artificial Intelligence May Impact Vision
Leading cognitive scientists have not yet agreed upon a simple definition of intelligence; therefore, it is difficult to define which artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced in computing systems. In the 1960’s, AI efforts were concentrated on time-sharing, and in the 70’s the emphasis was on database management. The most popular form of today's AI applications is the rule-based expert system. The real strength of AI today, however, is in its power of symbolic processing and heuristic reasoning. If these abilities can be expanded into the realm of image processing and vision applications in manufacturing, the restrictions imposed by classic numeric programming will no longer be limiting factors in computer vision. There may indeed be some systems capable of replacing the human eye.
