The New Technology In Iron Castings

The iron castings industry is in a technological revolution. New metals and casting processes are being commercialized but are not widely utilized because designers and product engineers are not fully cognizant of these new developments and their advantages. This paper lists the eight casting processes that are in use for iron and describes the characteristics of the six different kinds of iron that are cast. Two commonly overlooked aspects of casting design are described. The difference in principles between SAE and ASTM specifications for iron is discussed.
