Description

Back to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Fundamentals Package

This three-program video series is designed to introduce the foundational concepts of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Ideally suited for corporate training, colleges, universities, and other educational providers, these programs bring to life essential preparatory material in a clear, concise, and easy to follow format. Video program titles include (not for sale as individual DVDs):

Concepts and Rules
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is an engineering language that uses symbols and modifiers to clearly communicate design requirements on mechanical drawings. By using GD&T, a print can explicitly call out necessary tolerances in an unambiguous fashion. Using shop floor footage and animations to illustrate examples, this program introduces the viewer to GD&T rules and concepts. The 14 symbols used in GD&T are highlighted with examples to define their use. These symbols are organized into five categories:

  • Form symbols
  • Profile symbols
  • Orientation symbols
  • Location symbols
  • Runout symbols

Form Controls and Datums
Datums are reference measurement surfaces, planes, or points from which other part features are measured. By using the 14 geometric characteristic symbols along with datum references the functional requirement of a part or assembly can be effectively communicated. The proper identification and usage of datums in GD&T is explored. This program focuses solely on the form symbols:

  • Straightness
  • Flatness
  • Circularity
  • Cylindricity

Feature Relationships
This program is part of the Fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing package. In Feature Relationships, the 10 remaining geometric characteristic symbols and their categories are examined in greater detail using demonstrative examples to clarify their use.

  • Profile Symbols: Profile of a line and profile of a surface
  • Orientation Symbols: Angularity, perpendicularity, parallelism
  • Location Symbols: Position, concentricity, symmetry
  • Runout Symbols: circular runout and total runout
